PIP RYAN
Pip Ryan an Australian artist based in Narrm/Melbourne whose multidisciplinary practice explores humour, horror and the absurd. Working across drawing, sculpture, installation and video, she creates imagined worlds populated by hybrid animals, disembodied figures and darkly comical creatures.
Ryan uses playful forms and vivid colour to draw viewers into surreal and sometimes unsettling subject matter. Moving between personal experience and imagination, her work embraces contradiction, balancing humour with discomfort and the familiar with the strange. She also collaborates with her sister Natalie Ryan under the name The Ryan Sisters.
Ryan has exhibited extensively across Australia, including at Hugo Michell Gallery, MARS Gallery, Artbank, Gippsland Art Gallery and as part of NGV Design Week and Dark Mofo. She has undertaken residencies with Bundanon Trust and Steeple in Scotland, and has been a finalist in numerous national prizes including the Paul Guest Prize, National Works on Paper and the Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award.
